Old World Maps
This page, Old World maps, has most of the maps produced by
National Geographic before 1930. Plus maps produced after 1930 had
representations of older maps, or had an old map feel to it. I have listed them
below from the earliest map up to the most recent.

1. North Carolina, Tennessee, Cumberland Blue Ridge - October 1889 (22"x16") This early historical old world map shows the area from the Cumberland Plateau to the Blue Ridge mountains. It shows the city of Asheville with other towns.
2. Alaska - May 1891 (12"x10") This is an antique sketch map of Alaska showing Islands, rivers, boundaries with Juneau and Sitka noted.
3. Carte Generale des Decouvertes de Lamiral de Fonte – February 1892 (16”x13”) This is a black and white antique old world map created by Joseph-Nicolas de Lapos;Isle in 1752. Is shows the supposed discoveries of Spanish explorer Admiral de la Fuente and the tracks of Spanish, English and Russian navigators.
4. Muir Glacier, Alaska - March 1892 (19"x17") This is an antique old world map of the Muir Glacier, located in Glacier National Park and Preserve in southeastern Alaska. This Glacier was surveyed by Harry Fielding Reid in 1890.
5. United States of America - March 1892 (19"x17") This
is an early map of the United States compiled by mapping pioneer Henry Gannett. It shows all 48 states of the time plus color coded areas showing the source or "Mother Maps" for each area
6. Chronicon Nurembergense 1493 Map - April 1893 (22"x16") This old map was originally only in woodcut form, a Latin version first coming out in 1493 followed shortly by a German version. It was published by National
Geographic in 1893. The map shows all known countries, mountain ranges, rivers and other natural features. It has a spectacular marginalia, filled with the winds and mystical figures.
7. Ruysch 1508 map – April 1893 (23”x18”) This old world map was made by Johannes Ruysch and is one of the first maps of the new world. It includes an extensive view of South America, islands of the West Indies and a portion of North America. This map illustrates a number of significant geographic features
more correctly than before, especially along the easterly sea route to the Orient
8. Valley of the Orinoco River - February 1896 (17"x11") This antique map of the Valley of the Orinoco River shows the extent of territory drained by that waterway. It shows the proposed Panama Canal.
9. Submarine Cables of the World - March 1896 18"x13") This military map was first developed for The Department of the Navy. It was published by National Geographic in 1896 and shows where the submarine cables were laid, along with the locations where they connect with the land cables. It also shows the locations of refueling stations, repair facilities and docking facilities for ships.
10. Gold and Coal Fields of Alaska - April 1898 (30.5"x25") This map appeared during the famous Klondike Gold Rush and also includes Canada's Klondike region and much of the Yukon Territory. It includes insets of the trails from Tide Water to the Headwaters of the Yukon river and the Klondike Gold region.
11. Coast of Northwest America - November 1899 (21"x18")
Side A: This is an antique black and white chart of the coast of the Alaskan Panhandle and British Columbia. This includes the Prince of Wales Archipelago, New Cornwall and the Duke of Clarence's Strait. It contains the tracks of His Majesty’s sloop Discovery.
12. Coast of Northwest America - November 1899 (21"x18")
Side B: This side is also a chart of the Alaskan Panhandle and British Columbia. This includes the Admiralty Island, Lynn Canal and Prince Frederick's Sound. This antique black and white old world map also shows the tracks of His Majesty’s sloop Discovery
13. Theatre of Military Operations in Luzon - June 1899 (40"x26") Historical black and white old world map illustrating the Theatre of Military Operations in Luzon
during the Spanish-American war.
14. Seat of War in Africa - December 1899 (49"x35") This
map was put out shortly after the start of the Second Boer war in South Africa. It contains Tribe names, camping places and desert stations.
15. The Philippines - January 1900 (12.5"x10")Historic black and white old world map produced two years after the Philippines was purchased by the US from Spain after the Spanish American war.
16. Map of North Eastern China - September 1900 (37"x30") This is the first map of China printed by National Geographic. It is a black and white map and has items of note such as the Great Wall and Imperial tomb sites.
17. Philippines Military Telegraph Lines Northern - January 1902 (40"x33.5")
Side A: Very detailed map of the entire Northern group of islands of the Philippines. This map shows military cable lines and telegraph lines and commercial and military telegraph stations and telephone stations. It includes an inset of the Manila Bay area.
18. Philippines Military Telegraph Lines Southern - January 1902 (40"x33.5")
Side B: Detailed map of the Southern Philippine islands with an inset of the Tawi Tawi Islands. This map also shows military cable lines and telegraph lines and commercial and military telegraph stations and telephone stations.

19. Pilot Chart of the North Atlantic – February 1903 (34”x11”) This is a beautiful old world map filled with information including recommended routes of steamships, branch hydrographic offices, weather patterns over the ocean including storm and gale signals, cyclonic storm tracks, fog reports and more.
20. Map Showing Award of Alaska Boundary Tribunal 1896 - January 1904 (13"x13") This map depicts the boundary between the Alaskan Panhandle and British Columbia as
finally decided by a tribunal of U.S., Canadian and British officials in 1903.
21 Alaska - May 1904 (49.5"x36") This is a historical map of Alaska put out after the boundary was agreed to with Canada. It includes an inset map of the continuation
of the Aleutian Islands and an inset of the areas mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey.
22. Korea and Manchuria - March 1904 (43"x35") Historic black and white old world map of Korea and Manchuria. It has exceptionally detailed inset maps of Port Arthur and Vladivostok.
23. Philippines map - August 1905 (36"x24") Vintage map with relief shading showing the various cable lines of the time. It shows U.S. Signal Corps and civil
government cable lines, commercial cable lines and the Paris Treaty line.
24. Map Showing the Location of the Panama Canal 1899-1902 - October 1905 (34.5"x26") This map shows the location of the Panama Canal as recommended by the Isthmian Canal Articles. It contains a profile of the canal along with railroads, river diversions, cities, towns and locks.
25. Cuba - October 1906 (28"x13.5")
Side A: This historical political map was produced during the time disputed elections in Cuba led to armed revolt and intervention by the United States.

Side B: This is the second side of the map of Cuba reproduced from its original cartography.
27. North Pole Regions - July 1907 (19"x19")This old world map is a one of a kind loaded with information about arctic exploration. It contains an inset of
the Smith Sound region including noted explorers and an inset of Spitzbergen.
28. Africa - March 1909 (21.5"x17") This is the first map to bring Africa to the outside world. It includes country boundaries that show independent territories and the Congo State, along with territories under control of Egypt,
England, Germany, Spain, Turkey, France and Portugal. It shows railroads, steamship lines, caravan routes, cable lines, telegraph lines, gold, silver and diamond fields and ocean liner routes. The principal products of each country is clearly marked.
29. Mexico map - May 1911 (25"x17") This first map of Mexico put out by National Geographic was created by Scottish Cartographer and Geographer John George Bartholomew.
30. Countries Bordering the Mediterranean Sea - January 1912 (19"x11.5")This is a colorful political map of the region printed prior to the first Balkan War.
31. Birds Eye View of the Panama Canal - February 1912 (18.5"x9.5") This is a stunning relief-map-painting illustrating the panama railroad, locks, breakwater and other details of the region. This historic old world map will
make a fine addition to your collection.

32. China and its Territories - October 1912 (23"x17") This map came out the same year the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty abdicated and ended over 2000 years of Imperial rule. The Republic of China was born. It contains an Etymology key, thousands of place names, boldly marked railroads and the great wall.
33. Central America, Cuba, Porto Rico and the Islands of the Caribbean Sea - February 1913 (23"x16.5")This political map features ocean bathymetry and colorful country borders. It includes an inset map of the Panama Canal with a
cross section of the canal elevation.
34. Alaska - February 1914 (21.5"x16")This detailed map shows the growing human population to the region. It shows telegraph stations, post offices, telegraph and cable lines, mission stations, U.S. public schools for natives, military reservations, Northwest Mounted Police stations, mines and lighthouses. It has an inset map of the western extension of the Aleutian Islands.
35. Mexico map - May 1914 (25"x17")This is a great political old world map of Mexico showing the expansion of the highways and railroads taking place.
36. New Balkan States and Central Europe - August 1914 (23"x18")This historic political map captured Central Europe as it stood at the start of the first world war.
37. Europe Map 1915 with Africa and Asia - July 1915 (31"x28")This political map of Europe came out during the First World War. It is a fantastic map for those interested in the Great War.
38. Mexico map - July 1916 (30"x21")This physical map of Mexico has distinctive muted earth tones and contains a detailed inset map of the central portion of Mexico.
39. The Western Theatre of War - May 1918 (33"x28") This is a historical old world map which shows the western theatre of war in France and Belgium. It contains details of the battle lines that existed at this time.
40. Races of Europe - December 1918 (25"x22") This is a political map color keyed to show the races of Europe and the regions they inhabit.
41. Europe - February 1921 (33"x31")This detailed map of Europe has new political boundaries (decided and undecided) by the Peace Conference of Paris. It also has boundaries of countries as they existed before the war and an inset map of the Dardanelles.
42. Map of Asia - May 1921 (40"x30")This old world map shows Asia in the early 20th century showing a land of many contrast.
43. Map of South America - October 1921 (37"x26") This is a beautiful political map of South America with economic, climate and physical map insets.
44. Map of Discovery: Eastern Hemisphere – November 1928 (18.5”x16.5”) This old world map of the Eastern Hemisphere simulates the illuminated mariners charts of the 17th
century. It covers Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia and traces the routes of the great discoverers. It is part of the original murals painted by N.C. Wyeth for the National Geographic Society.
45. Map of Discovery: Western Hemisphere – January 1929 (18.5”x16.5”) This map is also part of five murals painted by N.C. Wyeth for Hubbard Memorial Hall. It includes North America and South America with political boundaries as they existed in 1927. The map has ocean routes of explorers and the dates they traveled them and a beautiful border art of Poseidon and a mermaid.

46. A Map of the Travels of George Washington - January 1931 (30"x21")This has a map of the Eastern United States with the routes and places visited by George Washington. It includes 1732-1758 Surveying and French-Indian campaign, 1759-1774 Travels to the West, 1775-1783 Revolutionary war and 1784-1799 Travels after the War. It has inset maps of Boston and Vicinity, Mount Vernon, Philadelphia and Vicinity, Tidewater Virginia and New York and the Lower Hudson.
47. A Modern Pilgrim's map of the British Isles - June 1937 (36"x30") This is a beautiful political map produced by National Geographic in 1937. It contains several illustrations of famous people and places along the outside of the map.
48. Historic and Scenic Reaches of the Nations Capital - July 1938 (31"x26")This is a beautiful map of the area around the nation's capital. It is filled with interesting historical notes on the general history of the region. It has pictures of notable figures and places
placed around the border. It includes locations of battlefields, ruins, old historic churches and other points of interest.
49. The Reaches of New York City – April 1939 (28.5”x26”) This map has beautiful border illustrations of famous people
and sites done in artful cartography. It includes places of interest including historic monuments, shrines, ruins and noteworthy architecture, state capitals, old churches and battlefields, highways, railroads and canals.
50.British Isles map - April 1949 (32"x26")This informative map comes with an illustrated border and stylish legend. It has many places of interest including cathedrals, ruins, battlefields and more.
51. Shakespeare's Britain - May 1964 (25"x19") A beautiful collector's map of Britain based on John Speed's map "The Kingdome of Great Britaine" from his 1611 atlas. This old world map shows
the settings of Shakespeare's plays and various points of interest throughout England, Wales and Scotland.
52. Colonization and Trade in the New World - December 1977 (30"x22.5")
Side A: Most of this side has an early map based on charts designed by cartographer Herman Moll in 1720. This is a great colonial map filled with historical notes and facts.
53. Medieval England - October 1979 (29"x22.5")
Side B: This historic old world map shows England in the 8th century and Henry II's empire, 1154-1189. It has a wealth of historical information and beautiful illustrations.
54. Africa:
It's Political Development - February 1980 (29x23)
Side B: This side contains a map of Africa crafted by Flemish
cartographer Ortelius in 1750. Has maps and explanations showing an overview of the political development of Africa.
55. Territorial Growth of the United States - September 1987 (42"x29")
Side A: Fantastic map of the territorial growth of the United States from the thirteen original colonies to the present time. It features eight insets highlighting historical periods. It shows selected battle sites from the Seminole war, the War of 1812, the Mexican war, the Texas Revolution war, Indian wars and the Civil war.
56. Boston to Washington circa 1830 - July 1994 (31"x10")
Side A: This shows an early colonial map from Boston to Washington dating around 1830. It contains the roadways and railways that were built around this time and has lots of historical notes.
57.Historical Italy map - February 1995 (33"x22")
Side A: This includes an old world map of the Roman empire at its greatest extent, and lots of historical information and illustrations including eleven inset maps of key periods. It also contains a map of Italy published in1486.
