Millennium in maps

During 1998-99 National Geographic produced the Millennium in maps series of maps. This consisted of six maps dealing with exploration, the physical earth, population, biodiversity, cultures and the universe/milky way. You will find these maps filled with illustrations and information on these subjects.

1. Millennium in maps: Exploration - February 1998 (31"x20")
Side A:
This side contains several physical maps of the world showing the routes of several great explorers. It is divided into sections titled 1. to AD 100: Setting out, 2. AD 100-1400: Expanding Provincial Realms, 3. 1400-1700: Voyaging for God, Glory and Gold, and 4. 1700-1900: Charting the World, Expanding the Mind.

2. The Explorers - February 1998 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side has pictures of thirty-two great explorers with a short write-up under each picture. There is a huge physical map of the world in the center showing the routes of all these explorers.

3. Millennium in maps: Physical Earth - May 1998 (31"x20")
Side A:
This side is filled with eight physical maps showing how the world looked 650, 514, 390, 237, 94, 65 and 50 million years along with 18,000 years ago. It contains an abundance of notes and illustrations explaining these different times in history.

Side B:
This side is filled with a huge physical map of the world produced from satellite images . On it is shown all sixteen plates of the earth's surface. Also shown are the ocean currents, prevailing winds, and notable earthquakes and volcanoes. It also has four map inserts showing Antarctica, the Arctic ocean, the Earth's crust and the climate zones.

5. Millennium in maps: Population - October 1998 (31"x20")
Side A:
This map helps show the effects on the earths environment by the worlds population. It has a colorful map showing the amount of population and growth in the world. Throughout are insets showing population fertility rates, urbanization, life expectancy and world migration. Another inset shows a world growing larger and less equal. On the right is a pictorial demonstration of technology through time.

6. Millennium in maps:Population & Resources - October 1998 (31"x20")
Side B:
The major portion of this side is filled with a huge physical map of the world. For each continent it shows population increase, income per capita, energy consumption, fresh water availability, cropland and carbon dioxide emissions. It shows the locations of fires, fishing fleets, human settlement lights and natural gas flares. On the bottom are two inset maps showing population density, and population and income.

7. Millennium in maps: Biodiversity - February 1999 (31"x20")
Side A:
The center has a  beautiful physical map of the world color coded to show the global forest distribution. The write-up which accompanies this map titled "Earth's Forest: Have we Overdrawn our Account" asks questions about the destruction of the worlds forest. Many other articles and illustrations are included on this side talking about the threats to the biodiversity of this land and the work being done on conservation and research. The map has many beautiful illustrations..

8. Millennium in maps: Diversity of Life - February 1999 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side has a huge physical map of the world color coded to show fifteen different vegetation zones like tundra, desert and dry shrub, mountain grassland, etc. All around the map are notes and beautiful  illustrations of the wildlife and insects that inhabit different regions. There are also two inset maps of the world titled Plant Productivity July through September and January through March. The maps are color coded to show plant production during these times.

9. Millennium in maps: Cultures - August 1999 (31"x20")
Side A:
This side shows a unique physical map of the world showing airline traffic, telephone calls, number of television sets per continent and the spread of the internet. It has write-ups titled The 1960's: Birth of the Global Village, A More Urban World: The ascent of Cities, and 2000: Globalization Realized. On the bottom is a timeline showing the rise of civilization from the ice age to the information age.

10. Voices of the World - August 1999 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side is filled with a colorful physical map of the world color coded to show the different languages of the world. It includes two small inset maps showing major language families today and major religions. There are plenty of notes throughout giving extra information on the different language groups.

11. Millennium in maps: The Milky Way - October 1999 (31"x20")
Side A:
This side has a beautiful physical representation of our milky way. It includes lots of notes and illustrations throughout explaining our galaxy.

12. The Universe - October 1999 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side has fantastic three dimensional representations showing the universe, our supercluster, the local group, our galactic realm, our solar system and our sun's neighborhood. On the top is a timeline showing the evolution of the universe.
