Maps of United States
This page covers all the maps of United States produced by National Geographic that shows the whole continent. Most of the early maps are political types with lots of detail and sharp colorful borders between the states. Later on National Geographic started including physical maps with lots of information on the history, geography, national parks and resources of this country.
Below are listed all the maps put out by National Geographic on the whole continent of the United States. Click on Map Titles that are Links to see a Picture of that map.
1. United States of America - March 1892 (19"x17") This is an early map of the United States compiled by mapping pioneer Henry Gannett. It shows all 48 states of the time plus color coded areas showing the source or "Mother Maps" for each area.
2. United States of America - April 1923 (38"x28") This is the first map from the maps of United States series published by National Geographic, with beautiful hypsometric tints showing elevations. It has city insets for Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, Baltimore, Washington DC, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Buffalo, New York and Boston.

3. The United States and adjoining portions of Canada and Mexico - January 1933 (40.5"x26") This is a beautiful detailed map of United States, southern Canada and northern Mexico showing state and international boundaries. It uses decidedly muted tones for the map.
4. The United States - December 1940 (41.5"x27") This is a fantastic political map from the maps of United States series, with beautiful relief shading. It has an inset map showing the population at this time plus an inset map of the population gain or loss between 1930 and 1940. It also has an inset map showing the Army Service Command areas and Naval Districts across the US.
5. United States of America - July 1946 (41"x27") This is a political map of the United States showing all the major highways of the time. It has inset maps showing the permanent location selected for the UN, a listing of the National parks and monuments as keyed to the map, and an inset of the area of Canada east of Maine.
6. The United States of America - June 1951 (42"x27.5") Beautiful detailed political map from the maps of United States series, covering all 48 states in 1951. It has detailed insets for New York City, the area of Canada east of Maine and an inset listing the National parks and monuments of the US as keyed to the map.
7. Historical Map of the United States - June 1953 (41"x26.5") This map from the maps of United States series, has a wealth of historical information. It also has details on explorers routes and immigrant trails. It has inset maps of the Central Atlantic States and the Northeastern states.
8. The United States - September 1956 (42"x29") This political map from the maps of United States series, was published prior to the statehood of Alaska and Hawaii. It includes inset maps of Alaska and Hawaii along with an inset of New York City.

9. National Parks of United States and Canada - May 1958 (25"x19") Side A: This map from National Geographic has information on the diversity of the lands, forest, memorials and battle sites administered by the National Park Service. It includes National Geographic's roles in the preservation of some of these sites.
10. National Parks map - May 1958 (25"x19") Side B: This map contains maps of the twelve most visited parks in the US: Colonial National Historic Park, Glacier National Monument, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Great Smoky Mountains, Mount Rainer, Olympic, Rocky Mountain, Sequoia, Shenandoah, Yellowstone and Yosemite Parks. The map shows ranger stations, buildings and points of interest.
11. The United States - July 1961 (25"x19") This historic map from the maps of United States series, was published soon after the statehood of Alaska and Hawaii. It is the first map to show the beginnings of the freeway system that soon became the interstate highway system.
12. The United States - February, 1968 (42.5"x29.5") This is a huge political map of the United States with colorful distinctive boundaries defining the different states. It contains many inset maps of the maritime provinces, principal Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, Aleutian Islands, Guam and others.
13. Portrait USA map - July 1976 (42.5"x29.5") Side A: This is a spectacular satellite image of the 48 contiguous United States. This was a benchmark for all the other satellite images that were to follow.
14. United States map - July 1976 (42.5"x29.5") Side B: This is a beautiful political map from the maps of United States series. It contains inset maps of Alaska, Hawaii and US and its principal outlying territories.
15. Wild and Scenic Rivers of the United States - July 1977 (24.5"x17.5") Side A: This side has a physical map of the US showing all the major rivers. It contains notes on many of these rivers.
16. Wild and Scenic Rivers - July 1977 (24.5"x17.5") Side B: This side is filled with inset maps of the best of the wild and scenic rivers. It has a Recreation Guide on all these rivers showing their total lengths and the lengths of the wild, scenic and recreational parts. The chart also shows the water character, popular uses, normal boating seasons and fishing times for these rivers.

17. America's Federal Lands - September 1982 (42.5"x29") Side A: This map from the maps of United States series, has an abundance of information about land use and resources of the nearly 740 million acres of Federal land. It shows wildlife refuges, national forest, national parks, Indian properties, BLM lands, military properties and offshore petroleum leases.
18. United States map - September 1982 (42.5"x29") Side B: This is a beautiful political map from the maps of United States series, with sharp clear boundaries. It has inset maps of Alaska, Hawaii and outlying territories.
19. United States map - September 1987 (42"x29") Side A: This is a political map from the maps of United States series, that is an update of the one put out in 1982. It also contains inset maps of Alaska, Hawaii and the principal outlying territories.
20. Territorial Growth of the United States - September 1987 (42"x29") Side B: Fantastic map of the territorial growth of the United States from the thirteen original colonies to the present time. It features eight insets highlighting historical periods. It shows selected battle sites from the Seminole war, the War of 1812, the Mexican war, the Texas Revolution war, Indian wars and the Civil war.
21. United States map - November 1993 (43"x30") Side A: This is a political map from the maps of United States series that is another update of the maps put out in 1961, 1968, 1976, 1982 and 1987.
22. Water Precious Resource map - November 1993 (43"x30") Side B: This physical map is filled with information on surface water, ground water, water pollution and water usage. It contains facts on water use in agriculture, to make electricity, in industry and more.

23. United States Federal Lands - October 1996 (31"x20") Side A: This map is color coded to show the lands controlled by the federal agencies. With the included descriptions of the types of federal lands it makes a fantastic reference of how the federal lands are used.
24. United States: The Physical Landscape - October 1996 (31"x20") Side B: This is a beautiful map which shows the physical forces that have shaped this country. It has insets of Hawaii and Alaska along with descriptions of the natural forces that formed the landscape.
25. Western Migration - September 2000 (35"x22") Side A: This side has a beautiful physical map of the western part of the United States showing the routes of the western settlers, such as the Oregon-California trail and the Santa Fe trail. This map is filled with notes, illustrations and insets about these pioneers, their reasons for coming, their hardships on the way, the gold rush and the effects of their coming.
26. The Pathfinders: Exploring the Far Frontiers - September 2000 (35"x22") Side B: This side has another physical map of the western United States showing the routes of the early explorers of this region such as Lewis and Clark and Fremont the Pathfinder. It is filled with historic notes on the map and write-ups and illustrations along the outside about these explorers and their travels.
27. The United States - October 2006 (37"x24") Side A: This is a political map of the United States printed on a white background with beautiful well defined boundaries between the states. It shows Interstate and divided highways, other roads, canals, ferries, airports, the National Capital and State Capitals. It has inset maps of Alaska and the Principal Hawaiian Islands.
28. The United States: History of the Land - October 2006 (37"x24") Side B: This is a beautiful physical map of the United States that uses colored relief shading to give a fantastic view of the surface of this continent. This shading allows you to see evergreen forest, bare ground/sparse shrubland, grasslands, small grains, row crops, pastureland, dense shrubland, open water, orchards/vineyards, roads, mixed forest, deciduous forest, woody wetlands, herbaceous wetlands and populated areas. All around are notes to help you decipher what's on the map. There are also two inset maps of Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands.
