Political and Physical Maps of Europe
This page contains several maps of Europe put out by National Geographic. I have divided them into sections starting with whole maps of the European continent. Other sections contain regional maps, European countries, traveler's maps of European countries and physical/special maps. I have put maps of the British Isles and the Mediterranean on other pages.

Maps of Europe: Maps of the Whole Continent

This section has maps that include the whole Europen continent.
1. Europe Map 1915 with Africa and Asia - July 1915 (31"x28") This political map of Europe came out during the First World War. It is a fantastic map for those interested in the Great War.
2. Europe - February 1921 (33"x31") This detailed map of Europe has new political boundaries (decided and undecided) by the Peace Conference of Paris. It also has boundaries of countries as they existed before the war and an inset map of the Dardanelles. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
3. Europe and the Near East - December 1929 (38.5"x34") This political map of Europe and the Near East has names of the countries in English with the national language of each country. It has an inset map of the airways.
4. Europe and the Near East - May 1940 (38.5"x34") This is another political map of Europe and the Near East which shows the international boundaries as of April 1, 1940. Included is an inset map of the Middle East.
5. Europe and the Near East - June 1943 (39"x34") Here is another political map of Europe and the Near East. It features distances from European ports to other world ports, and an inset map of the Middle East area.
6. Europe and the Near East - June 1949 (32"x28") This unique map of Europe has no ocean color, but has the countries with colorful borders on a white background. It has the Allied Occupation Zones in Germany and Austria after World War 2. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
7. Europe - June 1957 (33"x29") This is a political map of Europe made during the cold war. It has an inset map illustrating communist and non-communist countries.
8. Europe - June 1962 (25"x19") This map has colorful country boundaries including the 1938 boundaries of Germany, Poland and the Soviet Union.
9. Europe - June 1969 (30"x26.5") This is a political map of Europe which was first to show superhighways criss-crossing the continent. It contains notes on the political changes of this area.
10. Europe - May 1977 (30"x22.5") Side B: This is another political map with colorful and distinctive borders. It shows superhighways, railroads, roads, canals and scheduled air services that existed at this time.
11. Europe - December 1983 (43"x30") Side A: Here is another political map of Europe made near the end of the cold war.
12. Europe - December 1992 (28.5"x22") Side A: Here is a beautiful political map of Europe with vividly defined borders. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
13. Europe - June 2005 (31"x20") Side A: This is another beautiful political map of Europe. It contains four inset maps showing the present population, languages, gross domestic product and various religions of this continent.
Maps of Europe: Regions of Europe

This section of the Maps of Europe page has maps of different regions of the European continent.
1. The Balkan States and Central Europe - August 1914 (23"x18") This is a political map of the Balkan States and Central Europe done at the start of the First World War.
2. Western Europe - December 1950 (38"x30") This is a political map of Western Europe made after the end of the Second World War. It includes notes about post-World War 2 borders.
3. Central Europe and the Balkan States - September 1951 (39"x30") This is a political map of Central Europe and the Balkan States made shortly after World War 2. It has the American, British, French and Russian occupied zones of Germany, and the new boundaries of Russia and Poland.
4. Northern Europe - August 1954 (37"x30") This political map of Northern Europe shows the boundaries of Russia and Poland as of June 1, 1954. It shows the American, British and Russian occupation zones in Germany and has an inset map of Northern Scotland, the Faerdes and the Shetland Islands.
5. France, Belgium and the Netherlands - June 1960 (25"x19") This is a detailed political map of France, Belgium and the Neverlands with inset maps of Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.
6. The Balkans - February 1962 (25"x19") Here is a political map of the Balkans which clearly shows the communist and non-communist countries. It contains notes on Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.
7. Switzerland, Austria and Northern Italy - September 1965 (25"x19") Side B: This is a political map of the countries making up the mountainous region of the Alps.
8. The Caspian Region - May 1999 (31"x20") Side A: A beautiful political map of the countries surrounding the Caspian Sea. It has small insets for each country showing the population, income per capita and crude oil/natural gas reserves.
9. The Balkans - February 2000 (31"x20") Side A: This is a beautiful political map of the Balkans with sharply defined borders. It contains lots of notes on the individual countries, and three insets showing the Balkans during the Ottoman era, World War 1 and World War 2.
Maps of Europe: Individual Countries

This section of the Maps of Europe page has maps of individual countries of Europe.
1. Germany and its Approaches 1938-39 - July 1944 (33.5"x26") A fine map of Germany during the Second World War. It shows the international boundaries when Germany invaded Poland and also when Germany seized Austria and Czechoslovakia.
2. Greece and the Aegean - December 1958 (25"x19") This is a political map of Greece and the Aegean with details of the many islands in the region. It has inset maps of Athens, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles.
3. Germany - June 1959 (25"x19") This political map of Germany shows the thriving economic growth Germany experienced after World War 2. There is an inset map included of Berlin showing postwar occupied areas.
4. Italy - November 1961 (25"x19") This map was put out by National Geographic to commemorate Italy's 100 year anniversary. It includes two inset maps of Rome and its Environs. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
5. Scandinavia - April 1963 (25"x19") This political map of Scandinavia has subtle relief and shows various transportation routes including the ferries routes. It has inset maps of Iceland, the Faeroe islands and Jan Mayen.
6. Spain and Portual - March 1965 (25"x19") This is a political map of Spain and Portugal with inset maps of Madrid and Lisbon.
7. France Map - July 1989 (31"x20") Side A: This is a political map of France with inset maps of Corsica and France overseas including territories and military sites.

The section of the Maps of Europe page has maps specificly for those of you who wish to travel throughout Europe.
1. Italy - June 1970 (32.5"x23") Side A: This map features an abundance of historical information, tourist sites and illustrations of places of interest. It has inset maps of eleven different cities.
2. Traveler's map of Italy - June 1970 (32.5"x23") Side B: This travel map has information on the history of the country plus hints on clothing, currency, shopping, transportation and more. It also has a list of seasonal festivals and events held throughout the year.
3. France - June 1971 (32.5"x23") Side A: This map has an abundance of historical notes and inset maps of the major cities.
4. Traveler's map of France - June 1971 (32.5"x23") Side B: You will find a wealth of information on each region of France on this map, along with hints on clothing, dining, currency, sightseeing, transportation, camping and more. This map also has a list of the various festivals and events held throughout the year.
5. Spain and Portugal - October 1984 (36"x22.5") Side A: This map has lots of historical notes and sites of interest. It has inset maps of Barcelona, Lisbon and Madrid.
6. Traveler's map of Spain and Portugal - October 1984 (36"x22.5") Side B: You will find lots of information on the history and culture of this region on this map. There is info on tour routes, handicrafts and the Iberian wine country. It has inset maps on the Azores, the Madeira Islands and the Canary Islands.
7. The Alps - April 1985 (36"x23") Side A: This map features a large physical map of the Alps showing roads, highways and railroads running throughout the region.
8. Traveler's map of the Alps - April 1985 (36"x23") Side B: This side of the map has a large raised relief map of the Alps on the top, and a wealth of historical and informative notes and illustrations on the region below.
9. Germany - September 1991 (26"x20") Side A: This is a political map of Germany put out shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall.
10. Traveler's map of Germany - September 1991 (26"x20") Side B: You will find an abundance of historical facts and information on scenic roadways, tourist sites and castles, religious buildings, monuments, resorts and more here. It has inset maps of the major cities of the country.
11.Spain and Portugal - December 1998 (31"x20") Side A: This side is a political map of Spain and Portugal showing the major roads and railways throughout the region. It has inset maps of Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona, along with inset maps of the Azores, the Madeira Islands and the Canary Islands.
12. Traveler's map of Spain and Portugal - December 1998 (31"x20") Side B: This side has a large physical map of Spain and Portugal with lots of informative and historical notes along the outside. It contains inset maps on Costa de Lisboa, Algarve, Andalusia, the Basque region, Catalonia's Coast and beyond Madrid.

This section of the Maps of Europe page has physical maps dealing mostly with the history, geography or cultures of this continent.
1. The Western Theatre of War - May 1918 (33"x28") This is a historical map which shows the western theatre of war in France and Belgium. It contains details of the battle lines that existed at this time.

4. Celtic Europe - May 1977 (30"x22.5") Side A: This historic map of Europe is filled with details of the Celtic civilization including their warfare, religion, agriculture and arts. It has four inset maps showing regions of Celtic culture through the ages.
5. History of Europe: The Major Turning Points - December 1983 (43"x30") Side A: This is a historic map with multiple insets and a timeline of events from 4500 BC to AD 1979. The inset maps show Europe in 814, the Roman Empire, CA. 400, the world in 1500, the growth of Prussia, European Imperialism in 1914 and a map of Europe during World War 2. 6. Historical France - July 1989 (31"x20") Side B: This is a physical map of France with a wealth of information on its history, historical sites and popular resorts and tourist activities.
7. The New Europe - December 1992 (28.5"x22") Side B: This side of the map has a beautiful physical map of Europe. It also features a wealth of notes, map insets and illustrations on the population, immigration, languages, resources and industry, land use, agriculture, transportation and technology of this continent. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
8. Historical Italy map - February 1995 (33"x22") Side A: This includes a map of the Roman empire at its greatest extent, and lots of historical information and illustrations including eleven inset maps of key periods. It also contains a map of Italy published in 1486.
9. Italy map - February 1995 (33"x22") Side B: This is a beautiful raised relief map of Italy with inset maps of the Mediterranean region, Florence, Milan, Palermo, Rome, San Marino, Vatican City and Venice.
10. The Caspian Sea - May 1999 (31"x20") Side B: This side has a beautiful raised relief map of the area around the Caspian Sea. It contains several notes, inset maps and illustrations on the dynamic landscape of this region, the tapestry of cultures and the struggle for prosperity of the People.
11. Europe in Transition - June 2005 (31"x20") Side B: This side has three beautiful political/physical maps of Europe during three eras. These are 1920 post World War 1, 1960 post World War 2 and 2005 post Cold War. It also includes four inset maps on the population of the area. A great addition to the maps of Europe put out by National Geographic.
