Great Peoples of the Past
National Geographic put out six maps in a series titled Great Peoples of the Past between 1996 and 2002. These maps described six great early civilizations that existed in our past around the world. This included the Mongols, the Romans, the Mesoamericans, the Greeks, the Egyptians and the Inca. These maps are filled on both sides with beautiful physical maps, illustrations and notes and write-ups on these great civilizations. I have listed these maps from the first one down to the last one put out. Click on Map Titles that are Links to see a Picture of that map.

1. Great Peoples of the Past: The Mongols - December 1996 (37"x22") Side A: This side has a beautiful illustration of a Mongol army on the march which fills most of the area of the map. There is a short write-up and notes throughout this illustration. There is an insert showing a Mongol portable court tent. On the bottom is a timeline of the Mongol empire dating from 1206 to 1300 with lots of notes and illustrations.
2. Mongol Khans and their Legacy
- December 1996 (37"x22") Side B: This side has a huge physical map showing the extent of the Mongol empire in Asia. It is filled with historical notes. On the left are inset maps and write-ups on the Mongol Khans titled 1206-1227: Genghis Khan - Forging an Empire, 1229-1241: Ogodei - Storming into Europe, 1246-1259: Guyuk and Mongke - Rampage Through Asia, 1206-1368: The Great Khans - Legacy of the Hordes and 1260-1294: Kublai Khan - Ruler of the Celestial Kingdom.
3. Great Peoples of the Past: The Romans - July 1997 (35"x22") Side A: This side if filled with an illustration of the Palatine Hill, home to Rome's Emperors in the early forth century. On the top is a timeline of the Roman Empire dating from 49-31 BC to Ad 400 which is filled with notes and illustrations.
4. The Roman Empire - July 1997 (35"x22") Side B: This side has a beautiful physical map of the Roman empire filled with notes and is titled AD 69-138: Peace and Prosperity - Height of the Empire. There are also four insets titled 27 BC-AD 337: Rulers of the Empire - Chronology, 49 BC-AD 14: Caesar and Augustus - Consolidation of the Empire, AD 235-284: The Soldier Emperors - The Empire in Crisis and AD 284-337: Diocletian and Constantine - Division of Power and Empire.

5. Great Peoples of the Past: The Mesoamericans - December 1997 (35"x22") Side A: This side has a fantastic illustration of the city-state Palenque built by the Maya civilization. On the bottom is a timeline detailing the different cultures that make up the Mesoamericans from 2000 BC to 1600 AD filled with notes and illustrations.
6. Ancient Mesoamerica - December 1997 (35"x22") Side B: This side contains a large physical map of Central America showing the extent of Mesoamerica. There are insets titled The Setting: A Natural Abundance, 2000 BC-AD 259: Setting the Stage for Civilization, 250-900: Rise and Fall of Cities and States, 900-1521: World Trade and Tribute and 1521-Present: Conquest to Independence.
7. Great Peoples of the Past: The Greeks - December 1999 (35"x22") Side A: This side is filled with a beautiful illustration of the Acropolis in Athens. On the bottom is a timeline showing the reign of the Greek Empire with notes and illustrations from 2000 BC to 31 BC.
8. Ancient Greece - December 1999 (35"x22") Side B: A colorful physical map of the Greek Empire is shown on this side filled with historical notes and illustrations. Also included are five inserts with maps and write-ups titled To 1100 BC: Early Greeks - Heroic Age, 750-500 BC: Archaic Greece - The Spread of Greek Culture, 499-479 BC: Persian Conflicts - Rebellion, Invasion and Glory, 478-404 BC: Golden Age - Rise and Fall of Athens and 336-323 BC: Alexander the Great - The Legendary "Lord of Asia".

9. Great Peoples of the Past: The Egyptians - April 2001 (31"x20") Side A: On this side is a fantastic representation of Anum-RE's temple complex at Karnak filled with informative notes. On the bottom is a timeline of the Egyptian empire from 4500 BC to AD 396. It includes lots of notes and small illustrations.
10. Ancient Egypt - April 2001 (31"x20") Side B: This side includes a physical map of the Nile river valley filled with historic notes and small illustrations. On the right side is a list of the different dynasties and their kings. Also included are four inserts titled Circa 4500-3100 BC: Early Egypt - Two Lands Become One, Circa 2575-2150 BC: Old Kingdom Egypt - The Pyramid Builders, Circa 1975-1640 BC: Middle Kingdom Egypt - Peace, Prosperity, and Foreign Influence and Circa 1539-1075 BC: New Kingdom Egypt - The Age of Empire.
11. Great Peoples of the Past: The Inca - May 2002 (31"x20") Side A: This side has a beautiful illustration of the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu. On the bottom is a timeline of the Inca Empire with notes and illustrations from 900 BC to 1600 AD.
12. The Inca - May 2002 (31"x20") Side B: This side shows the Inca empire which stretched down the west coast of South America. It contains lots of historical notes. Also included are five inserts titled Circa AD 100-800: Moche and Nasca - Civilizations Emerge, Circa AD 500-1100: Tiwanaku and Wari - First Empires, Circa 1000-1470: Chimu and Inca - Imperial Rivals, 1438-1572: The Inca Empire - Uniting the Andes and Guide to the Andes - Archaeological Wonders.
