Archaeological Discoveries around the World

This page list all maps with information on archaeological discoveries that I have compiled from maps produced by National Geographic. This includes maps that show archaeological sites, historic sites, archaeological excavations, notes, illustrations, text or any information that pertains to archaeology.

A lot of archaeological discoveries can be found in the Great Peoples of the Past series of maps. These maps have lots of information on early civilizations along with great illustrations and pictures of artifacts.

1. Bible Lands and the Cradle of Western Civilization - December 1938 (34.5"x24.5") This is an early political map of the Middle East and Southern USSR. There are no archaeological sites actually marked on this map but there are a lot of notes explaining early historic sites of this region.

2. Lands of the Bible Today - December 1956 (41"x29") This is a huge political map of the lands of the bible with colorful distinctive borders. This map is completely filled with notes pointing out historic sites including several archaeological discoveries.

3. Holy Land Today - December 1963 (25"x19") Here is a beautiful political map of Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon full of descriptive notes of historic sites and archaeological discoveries. There is an inset map showing a bigger area of the Middle East plus an inset map of the walled city of Jerusalem.

4. Nile Valley: Land of the Pharaohs - May 1965 (25"x19")
Side A:
This is a fantastic map divided in two parts in order to properly show the whole length of the Nile Valley. It is filled with historic and archaeological notes on sites of interest. It includes an inset map of the Egyptian Empire 1450 BC.

5. Your Introduction to Ancient Egypt - May 1965 (25"x19")
Side B:
This side has a good introduction to Ancient Egypt. The right side has a large map index of the map on the other side.

6. Lands of the Bible Today - December 1967 (41"x29") This is an updated map of the one put out in December 1956. It is also filled with archaeological discoveries through historical notes on sites of interest throughout the map. There is a large inset map of the Holy Land and inset maps of the walled city of Jerusalem, the Traditional Route of the Exodus, St. Paul's Four Great Journeys and the Crusades.

7. Archaeological Map of Middle America: Land of the Feathered Serpent - October 1968 (25"x19")
Side A:
This is a beautiful political map of Middle America including Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, British Honduras, Honduras and El Salvador. It is filled with historical and archaeological notes on Aztec and Maya sites of interest. There are inset maps of Teotihuacan, Monte Alban, Chichen Itza and Tikal.

8. Middle America: Land of the Feathered Serpent - October 1968 (25"x19")
Side B:
This side has a great write-up on Middle America before Cortes. There is an inset map of the Valley of Mexico with historical notes, and an inset titled The Yardstick of Time in Middle America. A map index is also included for the map on the other side.

9. Ice Age Mammals of the Alaskan Tundra - March 1972 (31.5"x22.5")
Side B:
This is a beautiful illustration depicting mammals that once roamed the Alaskan tundra, a lot of whom are instinct now.

10. South America: Continent of Contrast Shaped by History and Geography - October 1972 (30"x23")
Side B:
This side has three inset maps that deal somewhat with archaeological discoveries. These insets are titled South America before Columbus, Discovery & Conquest and Wars for Independence.

11. Indians of North America - December 1972 (37"x22")
Side A:
You will find a huge physical map here colored coded into several regions. Around the outside are illustrations of the peoples who inhabit these regions and notes on each region. The map is filled with the locations where these early people reside along with forts and old routes.

12. North America Before Columbus - December 1972 (37"x22")
Side B:
This side contains a beautiful raised relief map of North America showing the locations of several early places of interest. The outside has several illustrations, write-ups and insets of historic sites that could be of interest to those interested in history or archaeology discoveries of this continent. There is also a big inset chronicling the North American past.

13. Celtic Europe - May 1977 (30"x22.5")
Side A:
This side has a large physical map of Europe filled with historical notes and the locations of early sites. The map is also filled with fine illustrations of early artifacts and a nice write-up on the Ancient Celts - Founders of Europe.

14. Colonization and Trade in the New World - December 1977 (30"x22.5")
Side A:
Most of this side has an early map based on charts designed by cartographer Herman Moll in 1720. It is filled with historical notes and facts.

15. History Salvaged from the Sea - December 1977 (30"x22.5")
Side B:
This side has a beautiful illustration of a Spanish Galleon. All along the outside are pictures of items that would be found aboard these ships. You will find lots of interesting write-ups here too.

16. A Visitors Guide to the Aztec World - December 1980 (25.5"x20") Side A: This side is divided into two halves, the left side shows the Valley of Mexico and the right side is a map of Mexico City. Both sides are filled with facts and historic sites of interest.

17. Archaeology of South America - March 1982 (37"x22.5")
Side A:
This side has a beautiful raised relief map of the western coast of South America. It is filled with historical notes and archaeological discoveries. It contains a physical map of South America and illustrations portraying the progression of cultures through pottery. There is a large inset with lots of great illustrations titled The Growth of South American Civilization.

18. Indians of South America - March 1982 (37"x22.5")
Side B:
There is a huge physical map on this side colored coded to show where the different Indian cultures lived. You will find lots of notes, pictures and illustrations of Indian cultures and artifacts.

19. Historic Mediterranean, 800 BC to AD 1500 Map - December 1982 (37"x22.5")
Side A:
This side is mostly filled with a physical map of the Mediterranean area filled with notes and sites of archaeological discoveries. On the bottom are insets of early maps titled The World of Homer ca 700 BC, The World of Herodotus ca AD 140 and The Hereford Map ca AD 1290.

20. Land of the Maya: A Traveler's Map - October 1989 (27"x20")
Side A:
There is a large physical map here of the Maya world showing existing protected areas, museums, populated places of archaeological importance, points of interest and ruins. It is filled with interesting historical notes.

21. Ancient Maya World - October 1989 (27"x20")
Side B:
One side of this map has a physical map filled with red dots depicting sites officially recorded by archaeological agencies of the respective governments. It is marked with historic sea and trade routes. The right side has illustrations of several artifacts set up on a timeline.

22. The March Towards Extinction - June 1989 (20"x15.5")
Side A:
This side is filled with illustrations of mammals made up on a timeline. It shows mammals long extinct up to mammals about to become extinct. Each illustration has a write-up accompanying it.

23. A New View of Dinosaurs - June 1989 (20"x15.5")
Side B:
This side has a beautiful illustration of Dinosaurs marching on a landscape. They are laid out in such a way to give a great impression of their various sizes.

  24. Special Places of the World: Holy Land - December 1989 (31"x20")
Side A:
This side has a beautiful physical map of the Holy Land filled with historical and archaeological discoveries. Special sites on the map are color coded to show what periods people occupied these sites, Stone and Bronze Ages (ca 500,000 to 1200 BC), Israellite and Persian periods (ca 1200 to 332 BC), Hellenistic and Roman periods (332 BC to AD 324), Byzantine period (AD 324 to 640) and Islamic period (AD 640 to 1917).

25. Special Places of the World: Holy Land - December 1989 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side is filled with inset maps and write-ups on the Holy Land. It includes a relief of the Holy City with major sites of interest pointed out. On the bottom is a street map of the Holy City and a physical map of the area around the Holy City with the locations of historic buildings and ruins marked by periods occupied.

26. Native American Heritage - October 1991 (29"x20")
Side A:
A large physical map occupies most of this side. Clearly marked on this map are tribal centers or museums, archaeological discoveries and historical sites, museums with Native American exhibits, Federal Indian Reservations and selected National Parks clearly marked.

27. Indian America-What you can Visit Today - October 1991 (29"x20")
Side B:
The center section of this map is filled with illustrations and write-ups on interesting sites to see. On the left and right sides are indexes to sites of interest for the map on the other side, broken into The West and The East.

28. North America in the Age of the Dinosaurs - January 1993 (27"x20")
Side A:
This side has a beautiful raised relief map of North America during the Mesozoic era. Along the outside are illustrations of several dinosaurs that lived during this time. On the map are marked where fossils of these various dinosaurs were found, broken up into the late Cretaceous, early cretaceous, late and middle Jurassic, early Jurassic and Triassic periods.

29. Dawn on the Delta: 74 Million Years Ago - January 1993 (27"x20")
Side B:
This side is filled with an illustration of dinosaurs, plants and insects that lived in the delta, now in Alberta Canada, 74 million years ago. On the bottom is an index pointing out what all these dinosaurs, plants and insects are.

30. Egypt's Nile Valley: The North - January 1995 (31"x10")
Side A:
This side contains the northern part of the Nile Valley in a physical map. It is filled with historical notes on places of interest and archaeological discoveries throughout the map. It also has insets and write-ups along the outside to better explain this area.

31. Egypt's Nile Valley: The South - January 1995 (31"x10")
Side B:
This side shows the southern part of the Nile Valley in a physical map that is filled with historical notes on places of interest and archaeological discoveries. It also has map insets, illustrations and write-ups to better explain the area.

32. Dawn of Humans - February 1997 (31"x20")
Side A:
The upper part of this side has a physical map of Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia color coded to show vegetation patterns. On it is marked fossil sites for Anatomically Modern Homo Sapiens (Over 50,000 years ago), Neanderthal, Archaic Homo Sapiens and Homo Erectus, Homo Ergaste or Homo Habilis. All along the bottom are insets titled Four Million Years Ago: Hominids take a Stand, Olduval Gorge: Source for Prehistory, 125,000 years ago: Exploiting a Climate of Opportunity, 65,000 years ago: Ice Age Routes to New Homes and Today: Prospecting for Hominids.

33. Seeking our Origins - February 1997 (31"x20")
Side B:
This side illustrates the evolution of mankind in a timeline from 4.5 million years ago to the present. Our ancestral tree is broken up into the Earliest Hominids, the Robust Hominids and the Genus Homo.
